Why resilience?

Resilience

The world is changing faster and faster and we are asked to constantly adapt to new realities: new tools, extra work, extra activities and solicitations.

While we do our best to try to meet those never-ending new demands (even the ones we might impose to ourselves), we can sometimes become overwhelmed and over stressed. We can lose our identify, our self believes, become deflated and unhappy and go down the wrong path, not knowing how we ended there and not knowing how to bounce back

What is resilience?

The Cambridge Dictionary describes resilience as: “the ability of a substance to return to its usual shape after being bent, stretched, or pressed.” In other words, to be resilient is to know how to bounce back in the face of adversity.

What is fascinating is that resilience is a trait: you can be born with more or less resilience but you can train to increase your resiliency. Like a muscle, resilience needs constant training: you do not become resilient in a day (likewise, you will not become an Olympic champion if you start jogging tomorrow) but you can gradually build a resilient mindset and nurture it.

Positive psychology researches resilience as a preventive education tool to strengthen mental health for all individuals to become resilient as opposed to treating individuals only once they become sick and develop pathologies. This means every individual should cultivate their resiliency capabilities in the same sense that everyone should adopt a healthy lifestyle, independently if they already have health issues or not.
